Middle School - Years 3 & 4

Throughout their time in Middle School, pupils are encouraged to achieve their full potential across the whole range of traditional subjects.

They are also given opportunities to develop their art, music, ICT, and technology abilities and participate in poetry and acting performances. In Middle School, the class teacher is responsible for teaching English, mathematics (in sets), science, history, geography, art, DT and PSHCE. In addition, the children are taught French, music, RE, ICT, games, PE and swimming by specialist teachers.

The School Day

We offer an optional Breakfast Club from 7.30 – 8.15am. The children will go to their classrooms at the end of Breakfast Club.

Children not using Breakfast Club can be brought to school between 8.00am and 8.20am every day, where a member of staff will welcome them on the drive as part of our kiss and drop system.  Registration takes place from 8.25am.

The end of the day is at 4.10pm. Children going home will be brought to the drive for collection or go to 'holding' if they have an older sibling that they are collected with. Parents can also book Extended Day, which runs until 6pm.

Curriculum

Each term, parents are given the curriculum plan. These will show parents any topics or themes that term and means that they can help reinforce learning at home.

In Middle School, we encourage the transfer of skills learnt in English to other curriculum subjects, promoting cross–curricular links in addition to providing opportunities for our pupils to write for different purposes, entertaining a range of audiences.  We aim to nurture each pupil's creative abilities to produce work that is unique, and that the child is proud of.

St Piran’s School Mathematics Department provides every pupil with an opportunity to benefit from mathematical experiences, helping them acquire the skills and understanding required for other subjects studied and everyday life. It reflects the essential role mathematics plays in education and encourages a positive attitude amongst pupils to foster self-confidence and a sense of achievement. In addition, the St Piran’s Mathematics Department acknowledges each child's individual learning strengths and needs, promoting an appreciation of mathematics both for itself and for its usefulness, giving pupils the confidence to communicate in mathematical terms.

Children are inquisitive by nature and already question everything; therefore, they have already begun their journey as young scientists – without even knowing it. Questions such as “Why is the sky blue?” and “Where do stars come from?” demonstrate engagement with their environment on a scientific level. At St Piran's, we use a variety of teaching styles to encourage our pupils to question, observe, compare and investigate in order to achieve a greater understanding of the world around them. In Years 3 and 4, we begin to use the science laboratory for more advanced scientific experiments and expand to expand their science literacy.
