Environmental Awareness Page

Each term, our Eco Schools Committee meets to discuss ways to make our school greener and more eco-friendly!

St Piran's has a special waste composter and paper recycling bins around the school in our efforts to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We also take part in the Rag Bag Scheme, collecting unwanted textiles.

Our latest initiatives include:

Litter - Recycling bins designed by the children have been placed at the front of school to make better use of our waste.

School Grounds - We are hoping to transform our school pond with plants and grasses over the coming months. Middle School pupils are working through the Royal Horticultural Society Gardening levels

Transport -  As well as running Bikeability courses, we are now looking to locate bike and cycle racks around school to encourage more environmentally friendly journeys to school.

Waste - We will be introducing recycling facilities in the staffroom for plastic and peel. We continue to use our Rag Bag and waste composter and every classroom has recycling facilities.

Global Perspectives - Ultimately, we hope to work with our catering department to make the school into a Fair Trade School. We continue to fundraise for the Kazi Mingi Foundation, a charity providing schools and education to children in Kenya. Our fundraising schedule for this year can be found here.

Water - Water butts should soon find a home around the school, helping to conserve water
.
Biodiversity - In a bid to further understand the environment around us, we plan to do an audit of wildlife in the woodland areas.

Energy - In order to achieve a 'Green Flag' we must have energy certificates, so we are working on ways to gain this.

Healthy Living - Our Chef is running special Healthy Eating menus through the High 5 and Olympic campaigns. We will also be 'walking' to Kazi Mingi in the summer.

Lots of initiatives in progress and plenty to look forward to!
