A new Headteacher for St Piran's School

St Piran's School is delighted to announce the appointment of Sebastian Sales as our new Headteacher. He will take over in September 2019.

Mr Sales is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance Multi-Academy Trust in Lightwater, Surrey, in charge of five schools.

Over the past six years Sebastian has played a major role in the formation of the Trust which runs five state-funded primary schools with a combined total of over 1500 pupils and 250 staff. St Piran's School Governors are delighted to have attracted such a high-quality candidate who will bring a wealth of diverse experience with him.

Mr Sales will be joined at the school by his wife, Anna who is also a teacher, and their two children, Isabella (7) and Thomas (4).  Mrs Sales was previously Head of History at Glendower Preparatory School in South Kensington and has specialist training to support children in phonics, ELSA and mathematics.

The appointment of Mr Sales, 48, ends an intensive four-month recruitment campaign which followed the announcement by current head, Jonathan Carroll, in April that he wanted to step down after 18 years at the School. The Governors hired top London education recruitment specialists, RSAcademics, and received over 40 applications for the role of the head.

Kate Taylor, Chair of the Board of Governors, St Piran's School, commented; “We received a fantastic response to the post and this made the selection process even harder. Mr Sales was chosen from a final shortlist of four excellent candidates, and we’re thrilled he has accepted our offer.  It's clear he shares a passion for education excellence with St Piran's School as well as a shared excitement for inspirational, skills-based learning and extra-curricular enrichment. We would also like to say thank you to Diana Watkins from RSAcademics who has gone above and beyond to help us find our new Headteacher for St Piran's.”

As well as the rounds of formal interviews with the Board, the final four candidates each had to take an assembly, sit-in on lessons and run a School Parliament with the pupils. Mrs Taylor added: “It provided us with a fascinating extra insight as to how the candidates interacted with the pupils.”

Speaking on his appointment, Sebastian Sales said: “I am thrilled by the opportunity to join St Piran’s. I am proud of the part I have played in establishing a Multi-Academy Trust and bringing the five schools together under one umbrella. But what really excites me is the thought of getting back closer to the children and being creative in the classroom. I can’t wait to take over in September next year.”

Mr Sales is a keen sportsman who has captained England Schoolboys at football and represented Middlesex at tennis and cricket. He is also a talented musician. As a student, Mr Sales attended Hampton School in Middlesex and his early career was in broadcast media after achieving a double first class honours degree in IT & Music at Liverpool University.

He retrained in teaching at the University of Lancaster and began his career in education in 2004.  Since then he has held several leadership roles including Deputy Head at Crowland Primary School in London and Acting Headteacher at Walton Oak Primary School in Surrey.

In 2012 Mr Sales became Headteacher and then Executive Headteacher at Connaught Academy Trust in Guildford which became one of the five state-funded primary schools of the Alliance Multi-Academy Trust.
